Process, Capability Model and Improvement Assets

PMIS has developed a number of process assets over the years. We are happy to offer these for public use, subject to normal copyright conditions; they can only be used with reference to PMIS as owner and author - by downloading any document from this page you are agreeing to these terms and conditions.

Project Management Capability Model

PMIS has its own project management capability and maturity model - this model has been used within a number of UK blue chip organisations, to assess their project management competence.  The model follows the CMMI maturity concept, and defines maturity against four levels:  informal; structured; integrated; high performance. The latest version of this model is used in our consultancy operations, and is substantially updated over the version available here. The free version is, however, still a very good starting place for undertaking this type of assessment.

The free version of the model was developed in 2008, contains a process description, and the detailed questions that would be used in the data gathering meetings that underpin the assessment.  The current version of the model contains additional areas, such as Benefits Realisation Management, recognising the advances in application in PM today.  Click here to download the free project management capability and maturity model . By downloading this document set, you are agreeing to the copyright conditions in the opening paragraph on this page.

Free Project Management templates

This page provides free to download project management templates for: project strategy; business case; risk register; requirements capture, risk/issue log; acceptance planning and control. The risk register contains a good deal of functionality to help with analysing risk data, and provides the basis of a number of very useful metrics relating to risk.

Tips for Project Managers

This page provides comprehensive tips for project managers. This page is intended to be especially useful to new project managers, but is relevant to any organisation or person involved in this challenging role. Like all of our "products" and information, it is based upon collective experience from a wide range of industries and circumstances.

Common Challenges on Projects

Since 1993, PMIS has been involved in many formal reviews of projects that have not been successful.  In addition, we start the majority of our training course with this exact question: what goes wrong on projects .  One of the most interesting results is that regardless of the industry of the audience of the training course, the response to this question are almost always exactly the same. This page describes, reasonably comprehensively, the results to this important question.

Evidence to Support the Value of Project Management

Through all of our activities, we try to find transferable evidence of the value of effective project management. In the early days of our business, is some sectors, talking in these terms was almost an act of faith, in as much as some sectors did not have a huge amount of real positive evidence.  We have a page that contains some real evidence of the positive value of project management - it also contains a number of useful references to anyone with an interest in this topic.
